Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

I have always been a firm believer in giving credit to the people who help you achieve success. Think about all of the people who have influenced you to be who you are today: your parents, teachers, mentors, co-workers, managers, bosses, or anyone else. The truth is, none of us can “make it” all by ourselves. It’s important to recognize those who have helped us along the way. It can help in more ways than you might think!

Perhaps the most obvious benefit to showing appreciation is the benefit to your everyday life and health. Not only does having a grateful mindset help you keep a positive attitude, according to WebMD, showing gratitude has positive benefits to your physical health as well!

Another benefit to showing gratitude occurs in a situation you might not have considered: the Job Interview! In an interview (or even when writing a cover letter), giving credit to the people who have helped you along the way can make you appear more humble. It can help you to convey a compassionate demeanor, and even allow you to come across as easier to work with.

Speaking of easier to work with, showing gratitude and giving credit where credit is due can help you keep your job once you get though the interview! Think about it: nobody wants to work with someone who always takes all the credit for themselves, right? By ensuring that you take the time to thank and give credit to those who contribute to your success, you act as a better team player than those who don’t. You can develop stronger working relationships with your co-workers, and you’re more likely to achieve success. At that point, not only will upper-level management likely notice your achievements, and your co-workers will having nothing but good things to say about you.

I highly encourage any and every one to give credit to others and show appreciation whenever possible. It helps to keep us happy, healthy, and employed!
