With so many variables in the job market these days, it can be easy to feel like we have zero control over our job search.
Many of us apply to job after job online, but never receive any responses. Or we try to network via LinkedIn or local events, but have trouble making meaningful connections.
Making contact with employers directly often doesn’t lead anywhere unless you are being referred by someone – otherwise you’re just told to apply online.
If you can relate to these struggles – you’re not alone!
Whether you’re in the midst of a job search, or just curious about what’s out there, it’s important to be prepared and take control of you career, every step of the way.
Here is a list of steps you can take to ensure maximum success in your job search and throughout your career:
…from your current job, your next one, and your career as a whole. This is easy for some, and incredibly difficult for others.
The good news is that you don’t have to be 100% sure – the world is an ever-changing place! What’s important is that you are keeping yourself open to new possibilities.
Even while employed, make a habit of checking out new job postings from time to time. Research local companies, or companies in cities you’ve always wanted to live in.
Learn about jobs that are logical next steps on your career path – or jobs that you’re interested in that may take you in a whole new direction. Whatever you do, keep yourself informed, and always aware of your options.
2. Always have a resume ready.
Speaking of new possibilities, you never know when one might arise. Make sure you are prepared by having your resume up-to-date, polished, and ready to send to interested parties.
There are few things more impressive to a recruiter or hiring manager than a candidate who is ready to act at a moment’s notice – and few things more aggravating than having their time wasted.
If they are ready to hire, don’t make them wait around for you to get your information in order. Be ready.
Another important way to prepare yourself is to have your 30-second “elevator pitch” ready to go.
If you aren’t already, start tracking your career achievements and the contributions you make to your employers. These are great “stats” that are quick to communicate, and convey your ability to perform well in your work.
From there, create a short (literally no more than 30 seconds) introduction for yourself, which you can use in meeting anyone who may be important to your career advancement.
4. Be aware of your employer’s future.
I got my start in resume writing as a Career Services Advisor in the proprietary (for-profit) college industry.
At the time, I didn’t realize for-profit colleges were becoming known for using predatory recruiting practices.
I just knew that I had a background in education and a knack for getting hired, which I could use to help new graduates land their first jobs in a new career field.
Luckily, I kept myself informed, and I was able to “see the writing on the wall” when the industry – my company in particular – started to crumble. I was able to search for and find a new job shortly before my company went under.
Always keep yourself informed about the direction of your company, and keep your options open in case you ever need to jump ship quickly.
Networking is an extremely effective way of advancing your career – but only if you do it right. In order for networking to be effective, you have to do it consistently.
That’s the part that most professionals don’t understand. Networking isn’t just something you do once or twice a month. When done effectively, networking is an active part of your daily (or at least weekly) routine.
Nobody likes a person who only shows up when they need something. It’s not enough to try to network with others when you need a new job.
You have to put effort into keeping in touch with your connections. Build relationships with them that aren’t focused solely on your own needs.
Share industry tips or information when you come across it. Congratulate them on new jobs or accomplishments within their company. Work to cultivate meaningful bonds.
Take Away
It seems the job market is more crowded than ever, and it is becoming more and more difficult to understand what employers are looking for and how to show them that you are a qualified candidate. But by taking these small steps, you can take control of your job search, and get the results you want in your career!
